Getting started with Ubiquity Unifi Access Points

Submitted by admin on

I recently got myself a U7 Pro Access point from Ubiquity. Because wow WIFI7, WPA3, new stuff, whats not to like.

I plugged it in my home network router and.... nothing happened. Ok first step is to understand that this thing runs on Power over Ethernet. I had nothing of that. OK, I found a reasonably priced POE injector that I got home and plugged in.

Now I got some light in the wonder device! :) Next up I installed the iOS Unifi app and tried out to create a site... But no cloud key is found. Hmm, what to do. On some official site I found that you can sign up and create a hosted site to control all you routers. Up to several thousands in fact. I created an account and got a site crated and I found my Access point and could create a local wifi. Wohooo. It is working. But the hosted solution is $30 a month. That is not something I will pay for an ongoing basis for my home network. What to do?

Luckily I had a Raspberry Pi 4 laying around that I did not use and I found this fabulous guide. In less than an hour I got a webinterface up and running from where I can control my entire Unifi infrastructure. Although only one device so far :)

So when you order your Unifi 7 device remember to have Power over Ethernet and a Cloud key manager for example on a Pi device.
